Invertebrates support healthy planet by providing food and clean environment for other animals and people. However, as climate change and environmental degradation progress, they face inevitable extinction, as many as 150000 species could disappear by 2050. Their extinction is considered one of the tipping points of the global extinction.
Buglife is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates. One project, Guardians of our Rivers: Next Steps trains and supports community groups to survey freshwater invertebrates and monitor the health of their local river. Volunteers are trained to survey for and identify target invertebrate groups, spot signs of pollution and record their data.
What to expect
In this talk you will hear more about Guardians of our Rivers: Next Steps and how you can get involved. If you are interested, there will be opportunities to take part in training in Spring 2026. The training is in two parts, a theory and a practical session. Once trained, volunteers survey once a month from April to October.
