The conference of choice for NHS professionals acting globally.

How is the UK contributing to global health? The Conference will feature over seventy speakers representing a broad spectrum of backgrounds in global health and development. The event is designed to enhance knowledge transfer between experts and participants, as well as to promote collaborative learning. Whereas health partnerships remain the lens through which we observe the development world, in 2017 we take a broader look at the challenges we are facing in global health and how the NHS is responding.

Programme Overview:

Day 1

Whilst the theme of the 2016 THET conference was ‘Impact, Evidence and Effectiveness’, reflecting on the impact of health partnership work, this year Day 1 will focus on next steps: building the capacity of existing health partnerships to maximise their efficiency, effectiveness and their reach in future work.

Under the theme of ‘Sustainability and Scale-up’, this day will be an opportunity for health partnerships, from low- and middle-income countries and the UK to gain insights, build skills, as well as learn from others on how to ensure the sustainability of their outcomes, how to scale up successful models for greater impact and reach, and how to improve their capacity to be able to meet these ambitions.

If you are attending Day 1, we also advise you attend Day 2.

Day 2

It is two years since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals. ‘No One Left Behind’ is to be the defining motto of this SDG era, born of a recognition that progress until now has been uneven. Millions of people have been left behind; especially the poorest and those disadvantaged due to gender, age, disability, ethnicity or geographic location. Nowhere is this clearer than in health.

Despite huge achievements through the period of the Millennium Development Goals there are several areas where the world continues to fall catastrophically short. Global maternal mortality rates for example, fell to around 200 in 2015, instead of 95, the stated MDG target. The lack of trained health workers is a major factor in this. Today, sub-Saharan Africa has only 3% of the world's healthcare workers but over 25% of the planet's burden of disease.

The UK is at the forefront of rising to this challenge. Alongside its impressive commitment to 0.7%, UK institutions are responding in unprecedented scale to the challenges presented by global health, in academia, the private sector, NGOs and across the NHS.

Day 2 of the THET conference will examine the SDG era, looking first at the challenges we face if we are to leave no one behind, before moving on to look at some of the ways in which the UK, alongside others, is responding.

The day will enable you to orientate your own work in the wider context of the SDGs. Alongside inspirational speakers you will be able to interact with like-minded colleagues. You will leave the conference feeling fluent in the issues that matter as we work to deliver a world in which no one is left behind.

Day 3

Do you work in the NHS? Are you looking to get more involved in global health activities? Day 3 is an opportunity for you to spend time with some of your most experienced colleagues following a structured programme of workshops built around THET’s Principles of Partnership which draw together five+ years of experience across 200 projects. You will end the day with a firm grasp of what working in a health partnership involves and with a strong insight in to some of the theory and practicalities of volunteering in low and middle-income countries.

If you are attending Day 3, we also advise you attend Day 2.
