From petrol stations to charging networks: how transport electrification is changing Norway’s energy landscape

15 January 2026, 1pm-2pm, Teams

Daniel Molin, Department of Sociology and Human Geography, University of Oslo

In Daniel's presentation he will show how the electrification of transport is changing the energy landscape in Norway, as we transition from petrol stations to charging networks. New car registrations in Norway have reached close to 100 % and almost a quarter of the car fleet is now electric vehicles. In his PhD in Human Geography, he analyzes how, and why this new technological system is introduced in Norway. He will show how dramatic the evolution of the electric car has been, showcase some examples of the diffusion of EVs and charging infrastructure in Norway, and finally look a bit into the future with a discussion what this might mean going forward. Along the way he will highlight the role of the traditional petrol stations and how they and the new charging operators are positioning themselves in this evolving market, in interaction with the developments in the auto manufacturing industry with its new entrants from China.

Daniel is employed by the Norwegian Environment Agency, currently on leave for a PhD in Human Geography at the University of Oslo, Norway. Originally from Sweden, he has more than 15 years of experience analyzing the market and policy sphere.
