From Rock to Paper: Sketch like a Geologist

Join us for a creative and educational workshop where art meets geology. This hands-on workshop will explore the geology of the southern side of the Highland Boundary Fault along the banks of Loch Lomond. We will walk from Balmaha to Millaroachy Bay and back again, crossing over the fault line and stepping into the highlands! Through pencil and paper, discover how scientific sketching helps geologists understand the landscape.

Geologists are artists out in the field, sketching observations to record and analyse the natural world. In this workshop, combining geology and art, participants will:

  • Learn how geologists use drawing as a scientific tool
  • Discover the geology of the southern side of the highland fault boundary
  • Explore and take part in basic geological field sketching techniques

No matter your level of drawing skill or geological knowledge, we’ll guide you through sketching techniques and note-taking practices - perfect for beginners and enthusiasts alike.

This in-person workshop is led by Josephine, who holds a BSc in Geological Sciences. You will be provided with a notebook and pencil so you can note down your geological observations!

Who is it for

  • Adult (+14 years) with an interest in geology and/or art
  • Anyone curious about the connection between art and geology
  • No previous experience in geology or art is required, just an interest in observing the world around you
