Do I need a large garden to grow Japanese Indigo or Woad

Accepted Answer

No you don't, you can grow in Tubs you just need to water more often. You need access to water and some sun. Most failures in the last year growers was due to the lack of watering.

Question 2

Can I use fresh leaves Indigo methods with any fibers?

Accepted Answer

Those are better for protein fibres like silk, for wool dyeing the Woad vat is a great start. For Cottons and linen the vats are best to get long term colour on your fibre.

Question 3

Do you need a lot of space for dyeing yarn or fibre? A lot of specialised equipment?

Accepted Answer

No you can work on small pieces for projects? Yes you can this way of working is perfect if you create small pieces. If you want to dye large work I can give you some guidance to create large vats too but you will need more than likely to rely on bought pigment.

Question 4

Are Japanese Indigo plant able to over winter? What about Woad?

Accepted Answer

No Japanese Indigo (persicaria tinctoria) are annuals and they tend to have a short growth season. Planting May/June, harvesting end of the Summer August to Septembre/October. 
Woad is a biannual , that means with the first year plant you will get the colour, with the second year plant the seeds.

Question 5

Is growing dye plants for Indigo pigment labour intensive?

Accepted Answer

No you need to spend a little time germinating seeds then once planted out it is just about watering regularly. The harvesting and processing is the most labour intensive.
