From spoon to ONS: Is 'food-first' failing patients?

Is ‘food-first’ a clinical ideal or a convenient myth?

Join us for an exclusive live, engaging, and practical webinar tailored for professionals working in nutrition and healthcare. This 1.5-hour session will explore the evidence, policy context and real-world approaches to closing the nutrition gap in the first 30 days after hospital discharge. This session will not be recorded, so this is your only chance to attend live and gain practical insights from NHS experts.

Our expert speakers will share practical strategies for supporting patients during this critical period, highlighting how oral nutritional supplements (ONS) can aid recovery, enhance patient outcomes, and relieve pressure on community care services by reducing the risk of hospital readmission in the critical first 30 days after discharge.

Hosted by Dr Duane Mellor (Registered Paediatric Diabetes Dietitian, Leicester), the event will feature interactive group discussions to enhance practical learning and collaboration.

What you'll learn:

✅ Describe the clinical limitations of a food-first-only approach in specific populations

✅ Identify when and how to appropriately escalate from food-first to fortified foods and ONS

✅ Explain the evidence base supporting early ONS use in malnutrition pathways

✅ Discuss practical solutions for improving adherence, taste acceptance, and dignity in prescribing
