Event description

Description

Maggie Sawkins joins Portsmouth’s City of Stories and the Good Mental Health Co-operative to bring you an exciting free poetry course.

Recent research has established that new brain cells grow as quickly when you are in your seventies as when you are in your twenties. What better way to stave off old age (and impress friends and family at the same time!) than by learning a poem by heart.

Participants will discover how creative writing and reading can assist the healing process by fostering a sense of well-being. A simple prompt, for example, can open up a space that lets words flow and can help us find the things that are most important to us. Participants will be able to work at their own pace in a safe and secure environment. In addition, the group will join together to explore techniques to improve the memory whilst learning a poem by heart. There will be an opportunity at the end of the course for participants to attend a celebratory event as part of Portsmouth’s City of Stories Project, and Bookfest 2020.

No experience needed.

The course workshops will be held on the following dates: Jan 8th, Jan 22nd, Feb 5th. A rehearsal for the celebratory event will be held on Feb 19th. All dates are Wednesdays, from 2-4pm, in Room F on the 3rd Floor of the Portsmouth Central Library.

The workshops will be facilitated by award winning poet Maggie Sawkins. Maggie has over twenty years experience of teaching creative writing in community and health care settings. She is a professional member of the National Association of Writers in Education and holds an MA with distinction in Creative Writing. https://hookedonwords.me

About the Mental Wealth Academy

The Mental Wealth Academy supports people to access community based activities and workshops which help with inclusion, recovery and good mental health. The support is intended for people who have experienced serious life challenges, are socially isolated, anxious or lacking in confidence. This may include experience of mental ill-health, addictions, disability, bereavement, caring responsibilities for example.

At the Good Mental Health Cooperative, we believe that connecting with others, and informal learning opportunities, are really important steps to good mental health, bringing a sense of inclusion and challenge, rather than feeling isolated and lacking in purpose.

This is an introductory programme, with funding provided by the Big Lottery for the free workshops and courses.
