Event description
A visual tour of the wealth of modern sculpture around the Baroque magnificence of St Paul’s Cathedral, with City Guide Ildiko Bita.

About this event

The Baroque magnificence of St Paul’s Cathedral is surrounded by a wealth of striking modern sculpture which makes the City of London an outdoor gallery. This illustrated lecture by Six in the City Guide Ildiko Bita may open your eyes to the riches of the City’s street art.

Discover the magnificent public sculptures in and around St Paul’s Cathedral and Temple Bar in the heart of the City of London. The works are challenging and beguiling in turn, ranging from giant origami, an androgynous shepherd and stone angels, to a snapshot of a notorious murder and an enormous nail. The sculptors are as diverse as the under-appreciated Elizabeth Frink (1930-93) and YBA Gavin Turk (b. 1967), Thomas Heatherwick (b. 1970), designer of the Olympic Cauldron and Routemaster bus, and Emily Young (b. 1951), Britain’s greatest living stone sculptor.

The live stream on Zoom supports optional closed captioning, from automated transcription in real time.

Ildiko Bita is a City of London Green Badge guide, a member of the Six in the City guiding group (https://sixinthecity.co.uk/), 'part-time lawyer and full-time geek', who regularly leads tours for the Guildhall Art Gallery and Roman amphitheatre, Billingsgate Roman bathhouse and Open House London.

A modest booking fee for this talk goes toward the work of the Friends of the City Churches, an architectural heritage charity devoted to supporting the historic churches of London's ancient Square Mile. For more information, please visit our Web site at http://www.london-city-churches.org.uk/.
