Event description
Discover Bloomsbury's connections with France on this guided walk with Paul Guest.

About this event

This walk, led by Paul Guest, will focus on nine famous people, all English-speaking by birth, and one institution. Relevant fields of activity include molecular biology, medicine, literature and WW2 wireless operations. You will learn why this country's first female doctor had to qualify initially in France, and will hear about a poet who wrote in both English and French, an exhibition which introduced the British to modern French art and a hotel modelled on a French chateau. You will also find out who Madame la Générale was.

Knowledge of French not required (except for the guide).

Organiser Bloomsbury Festival

Organiser of From the Land of the City of Light: Some Bloomsbury French Connections

Local, global, inspiring - Bloomsbury Festival is a unique event created with over 100 partners in this vibrant cultural quarter.  For ten days in October, the streets, parks, museums, galleries, laboratories and public and private buildings of Bloomsbury will host up to 150 original events which attract audiences from across London and beyond.

A hotbed of creativity and pioneering development, Bloomsbury also has one of the youngest and most diverse residential populations in the country. Bloomsbury Festival acts as a catalyst bringing together the area's artists, scientists and residents to explore arts and ideas through the prism of an annual theme.

Outside the Festival event, the organisation delivers community engagement and arts development projects across the year. These include it’s pioneering project, Festival in a Box, which takes artists into the homes of people living with dementia to provide life enhancing and joyful cultural experiences.

Above all, Bloomsbury Festival aims to be enlivening, engaging, entertaining, and fun!

Bloomsbury Festival is a charity. Find out how you can support us.
