Event description
Come and discover what happens after you flush your toilet as Camborne Wastewater Treatment Works opens its doors to visitors

About this Event

The South West Water works provides full biological sewage treatment for Portreath, Redruth, Camborne and surrounding areas and will be open on Tuesday, 17 September.

Wastewater Services Operations Manager Peter Kelland said: “We don’t often think about what happens to everything once we flush, so we thought it would be a great idea to open our doors to our neighbours so they can find out. “We also want to raise awareness about what we should and shouldn’t be flushing, as the wrong items down toilets and sinks contribute to the 8,500 sewer blockages we deal with each year.”

Visitors will witness each stage of the treatment process including preliminary treatment to screen out items including grit and grease, primary settlement to separate the solids from the liquid and a secondary biological process where naturally occurring organisms break down the organic material.

Important information

  • Members of the public are invited to attend guided tours on Tuesday 17 September at 10am and 1pm, with each tour due to last about 90 minutes.
  • Please book using the Eventbrite form.
  • Visitors will need to climb stairs to complete tour and we would recommend visitors wear appropriate footwear with a good grip. Fashion shoes, sandals and other ‘open’ shoes are not suitable.
  • For further information, please contact Steve Lowrie on slowrie@pennon-group.co.uk or call 01392 443421.

Directions

Take the A30 towards Penzance. Take the 2nd exit for Camborne, signposted West Camborne and turn right over the A30 at the junction on top of the slip road.

Where the road bears right (back onto the A30) keep straight on, and after 300 metres the road bears left. Go straight on (indicating a right turn) but do not turn right for Reskadinnick at that junction. Go straight on to the site entrance on the right.
