Description

From traditional to active; reinvigorating your teaching

An interactive workshop with Professor Tina Overton (Director of the University of Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence)

It is well known that active learning, in its many manifestations, leads to better conceptual understanding and the development of transferable skills. The evidence is so compelling that active learning should be implemented in some form in all academic programmes. This workshop will enable participants to consider implementing active learning strategies at three levels.

  • in the traditional didactic lecture - there will be an opportunity to try out some relatively easy tools and approaches that enable student activity in a traditional lecture setting

  • in flipped learning - participants will be able to consider redesign of some teaching to the flipped mode to enable active and independent learning for students and possible time savings for staff

  • in problem-based learning - the ultimate in active learning, bringing together independent learning, ownership of learning and transferable skills development. Participants will have the chance to consider redesigning some aspect of a module for delivery by PBL

For this interactive hands-on workshop, you may find it useful to bring with you details about a teaching session or module that you would like to consider redesigning.
