About this event

Front Crawl Improvers 13 Session Course

Thursdays 8:00 to 9:00pm (18th April to 18th July)

PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO SESSION ON 30th May

Portishead Open Air Pool

For ADULT swimmers who can manage basic front crawl, but would like to begin achieving some distance.

I s this the right Course for you?

You’ve got the basics of the stroke sorted. It looks and feels like front crawl, and you can manage four lengths of a pool without needing to break into breaststroke to breathe. But it exhausts you and you need a long rest before attempting it again. You really feel that you aren’t getting much propulsion from your stroke and would love for it to be relaxed and “easy”.

You would ultimately like to be able to swim front crawl for ten lengths of the pool without stopping, and without your stroke falling apart as you get tired. You are also a little curious about other strokes and fancy having a go at improving them too. Ideally, you’d like to reach the stage where you could get a reasonable workout in the pool and get in some distance and build your swim fitness.

(If you do not know how to swim Front Crawl, or if you can get going but find a whole length exhausting or seemingly impossible, then please check out the "Front Crawl Beginners" courses)

What happens in the sessions?

You will be in a lane with six other swimmers under the instruction of Charlie Stockford. You will work on the basic steps to maintain correct body position, breathing technique and sequence of movement needed to gain efficient propulsion for Front Crawl. Your instructor will guide you from where you are now, taking you through drills and exercises to practice (and hopefully work on in your own time too).

Who is your Instructor?

Charlie Stockford is an experienced swim coach, specialising in working with adults to build their confidence in the water. She is a regular open water swimmer and has run sea swimming groups both locally and on the south coast, as well as working with the adult section of Keynsham swimming club. Her Improver sessions are designed as part of the progression route towards the training sessions run by Alec Richardson on the same evenings. Charlie and Alec have previously run successful courses together which have taken beginner swimmers from learning Front Crawl in the pool to outdoor training sessions in Clevedon Marine Lake and adventure swims to spectacular locations such as Lulworth Cove and Old Harry Rocks in Studland Bay.

By purchasing a ticket for these sessions, you agree to the following:

HEALTH and SWIM-FITNESS DECLARATION

By purchasing a ticket for this course you are confirming that you are physically fit and healthy enough to take part in the swimming sessions as described. In particular, respiratory, heart or circulatory conditions can be an issue. If you have any restrictions to your movement it is helpful for your coach to know this. If you have any concerns or underlying medical conditions then please contact the organiser to discuss them or speak to your coach BEFORE entering the water.

• On entry to the pool please register with your coach

• Correct swimming lane choice, and safe operation within the lane during the session will all be dealt with at the start of each session once you are in the water. You must follow the instructions of your coach with regard to direction of swim, stroke etc. to avoid potentially dangerous situations. Failure to do so will result in you being instructed to leave the pool.

• The lifeguards and pool management have overall authority for the safe operation of the facility, so please abide by any instructions from them whilst at the pool.

• Should a session need to be cancelled at short notice (e.g. the wind being too strong to safely remove the pool cover) you will be informed as soon as practically possible via email using Eventbrite’s email system. I will also endeavour to get a message out via the Portishead Evening Squad Facebook group.

Ticket Purchase, Cancellations and Refunds.

Tickets can only be purchased in advance online for a complete 13 week block. Swim spaces are not refundable, and they are not transferrable.
