Join us for an online screening of a programme of short works, the first event in a planned larger series entitled FRONTIERLAND, curated by Pamela Cohn and Open City Documentary Festival. The screening is presented in partnership with Bertha DocHouse.
FRONTIERLAND is a multi-event film series that was due to take place during Summer 2020, but with cinemas closed, we currently cannot proceed as planned. With borders closed and people's movement across the world restricted, the themes of the programme feel even more pertinent and so we decided to move the first event of the series online, (streaming live on Weds May 27th, 7pm BST), remaining ever hopeful that soon we will all be able to meet in the cinemas again.
Inspired, in part, by the writings and ideas in Giuliana Bruno’s Atlas of Emotion: Journeys in Art, Architecture, and Film and Tom Conley’s Cartographic Cinema, FRONTIERLAND is a survey of new and older works that expand the idea of the filmic travelogue – moving image works that reveal our evolving relationship to place. Physical presence in an increasingly mediated era is no longer required to experience the breadth of ways one can move through the world. This selection of films speaks to that shift in the way we conceive of distances traversed, the world expanding and contracting, revealing terrain that is material, emotional, philosophical and transcendent.

This one-off livestream screening will be available to watch online in-real time followed by a Q&A with participating filmmakers, hosted by Pamela Cohn.

The screening is free but requires registration via Eventbrite. We will circulate programme notes ahead of the screening and you will receive a link to the livestream 24 hours before the event.

Open City Documentary Festival creates an open space in London to nurture and champion the art of creative documentary and non-fiction filmmakers.
The festival takes place over seven days in venues across central London and the programme offers a chance to see the best in contemporary, international documentary as well as filmmaker Q&As, industry panels, workshops, live music, networking and parties. The 2020 festival will take place between 9th-15th September 2020.
