Parliament has been dissolved once more in preparation for the snap General Election announced by Theresa May. The efforts of all the Prospective Parliamentary Candidates will now be on ‘full ahead’ with the election itself only a matter of weeks away.

FSB Furness Branch is also finalising its own preparations for a Business Hustings event that will take place at Furness College on Tuesday 6th June.

Chairman of the Furness FSB, Phil Collier, said: “With the huge levels of investment flowing into the Furness area, our Branch Committee felt the need to give local business owners the opportunity to ask some serious questions of the Prospective Parliamentary Candidates or, in other words, our future MP.”

At the time of writing, the following Barrow and Furness PPCs have accepted an invitation to appear at the hustings event. They are:

Loraine Birchall – Liberal Democrat
Simon Fell – Conservative
Rob O'Harah - Green Party
Alan Piper - UKIP
John Woodcock – Labour Co-operative

With the immediate future of the Trident Successor Programme secured, there are a number of key issues facing the area over the coming years, according to the FSB. These range from ensuring local businesses become involved in supply chains, through to addressing the matter of ensuring that we have – and grow – the right skills for the long-term success of the area and include a wide range of related issues such as transport, housing, health and education as well as support for the BIDs in Barrow and Ulverston and, of course, the promotion of South Cumbria as an area to live and work.

Mr Collier added: “Normally, such a hustings is a once every five year opportunity to quiz the politicians. This snap election gives us another chance to ask pertinent questions on key matters relating to our area. After all, it is important that we not only have the right Government going forward but, perhaps, more importantly, the right Member of Parliament for Barrow and Furness to ensure that our key issues are taken to, and as discussed at, the highest level in Parliament.”

“We have also been extremely fortunate to have secured the Principal of Furness College, Andrew Wren, to chair what is likely to be a very lively debate.”

The event commences at 6pm on 6th June. Mr Collier finished by saying: “This event will be all about the business community, so I urge all small business owners to come along and have your say. As always, our events are open to both FSB members and non-members and are FREE. I look forward to seeing a positive and lively audience!”
