Event description

Description

Fuel poverty and health awareness training

In East Sussex there are around 350 preventable deaths each winter. Being cold at home makes underlying health problems worse or even fatal. Being too cold can also increase the risk of trips and falls, stroke or heart attack.

The training will introduce fuel poverty, identification of vulnerable households, the East Sussex Winter Home Check service and how to make a referral.

The two hour session will cover:

  • Background to fuel poverty, excess winter deaths, and heath conditions affected by cold homes.

  • East Sussex Winter Home Check – identification and referral of eligible households – scope of service – measures/interventions available.

  • Other help and support available; coldAlert, grant funding, benefits advice, debt advice, energy supplier switching,

  • Advice - where to find advice on making changes to the home reduce bills, information on minor DIY insulation and draft proofing,

  • “Able to pay“ – where to find advice / handy people or installers to advise on the best measures to reduce bills and keep warm.

  • Awareness of support local councils offer to assist tenants with landlords who are not providing adequate and affordable heating to homes.

The East Sussex Fuel Poverty Coordinator is hosted by Hastings Borough Council and funded by East Sussex Public Health. Training is being delivered as part of the East Sussex Energy Partnership’s fuel poverty reduction programme. This activity forms part of our place based health and care transformation programmes East Sussex Better Together and Connecting4You in the west of the county.
