MORE EMPATHY, BETTER POLICIES?

Empathy was recently celebrated as the essential, transformative quality we should all develop for the 21st century. Much more than simply the ability to step into other people’s shoes, empathy is said to be the vital ingredient of better relationships, more functional organisations, successful public policy and political engagement. Being able to understand what the world looks and feels like from another’s point of view is key to grasping why some ideas and policies take hold and why different groups will react in different ways. But how can we integrate other’s perspectives into our work? How can empathy be channelled in the policy making process and help improve policy design and its communication?

Social philosopher and cultural thinker Roman Krznaric has researched empathy extensively. He is the founder of the world’s first Empathy Museum and of the digital Empathy Library. His books have been published in more than 20 languages and his writings have been widely influential amongst political and ecological campaigners, education reformers, social entrepreneurs, and designers. Krznaric will explain the different forms of empathy and reveal what we can do to add more empathy into our life or others’. He argues that empathy can advance human rights, social justice and make people deal with climate change, for real.
