SEIZE THE DAY
Have your friends ever told you to ‘just do it’ because #yolo (you only live once), or to ‘be in the moment’ and live as if you might die tomorrow? The spirit of carpe diem, seize the day, is one of the oldest pieces of life advice in Western history. Carpe diem reminds us to live with greater passion, consciousness and intention, so we don’t end up with regrets. Is there anything wrong with it? Roman Krznaric believes there is.
Today the spirit of carpe diem has been highjacked by consumer culture and digital entertainment - 'just do it' really means 'just buy it’. But if we want to live our lives to the fullest, we need to claim it back! Roman has delved into the life of great carpe diem figures, and explored the history and science of carpe diem as far as the neuroscience of procrastination to find out that over the centuries human beings have invented smart and powerful ways of seizing the day that we urgently need to revive. Come and hear what they are and how we can recapture the art of seizing the day.
Roman Krznaric is a cultural thinker and writer on the art of living and social change. He is founder of the world’s first Empathy Museum and of the digital Empathy Library. He is also a founding faculty member of The School of Life, and advises organisations including Oxfam and the United Nations on using empathy and conversation to create social change. His writings have been widely influential amongst political and ecological campaigners, education reformers, social entrepreneurs, and designers. He is considered one of Britain’s leading popular philosophers.
