Immigration is the issue of our time: riddled with moral, environmental, philosophical and political questions with few clear-cut solutions. Philosopher Avner de-Shalit addresses some concrete moral and political questions of absorbing immigrants in cities in particular. Should cities have border control? How inclusive should cities get? What rights should immigrants have when they reside in a new city? What kind of model works best when it comes to immigrants' inclusion in cities?

Professor Avner De-Shalit is a political philosopher and the Max Kampelman Professor of Democracy and Human Rights at the department of political science, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Between 1995 and 2004 he was an associate fellow at the Oxford Centre for Environment, Ethics and Society. His fields of research and teaching are equality, democracy and human rights, environmental politics and environmental political theory. Previously the dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (2009-2012), he is now head of the Glocal-Community Development Studies programme. He is the author of 7 books and numerous papers, in environmental philosophy and politics and also the politics of cities. In 2014 he was awarded the Rothschild Prize in Social Sciences. Avner de-Shalit belongs to the core faculty at “Human Rights under Pressure”. He has recently delved into researching cities, their ethos, and their role in providing wellbeing to citizens over the state. He is currently writing a book about moral and political questions of absorbing immigrants in cities, and advancing a joint project on the ways in which artists seek to bring about social and political impact in the city where they live.

The Spirit of Cities: Why the Identity of a City Matters in a Global Age. Daniel A. Bell & Avner de-Shalit (2011). Disadvantage (2013).
