STEAM and Arts are vital to the modern knowledge economy. Sir John O’Reilly illustrates the complex journey from knowledge creation to impact in society and explores the role that universities play in the growth of innovation and industrial strategy.

 

About Sir John O'Reilly

Sir John serves contemporaneously as Chairman, Science and Engineering Research Council of the Agency for Science Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore; Chairman ERA Foundation Ltd., Chairman, NICC (Standards) Ltd. and Visiting Professor at UCL. He was previously Director General Knowledge and Innovation within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (2013-15), Vice-Chancellor of Cranfield University (2006-2013) and Chief Executive of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (2001-2006), which followed academic appointments at Essex, Bangor and UCL. He has experience in industry and government research (Royal Radar Establishment, Ultra Electronics Ltd., Post Office Research Centre, BT Laboratories) and the SME sector (IDB Ltd, CAST Ltd).

 Active in the profession he is a Fellow and former member of Council of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a commissioner of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, an Honorary Fellow and former President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET formerly IEE), past President of EUREL (confederation of European Electrical Societies) and former Chair of Systems and Communications Engineering for the European Research Council. He is the author of some 350+ research publications in the broad field of Information and Communications Technology, holds the IEE J J Thompson Medal for contributions to electronic engineering, is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, and is a Fellow and Trustee of the Royal Aeronautical Society. An International Member of Académie Hassan II des Sciences et Techniques and of Academia das Ciências de Lisboa he received a knighthood in the 2007 New Year’s Honours List recognising contributions to science.
