About this event

Join Alastair Duncan in an exciting workshop where we will learn to have fun creating tapestry. Alastair is normally based in Wales, so this is a rare chance to learn from an internationally recognised tapestry artist.

This workshop will look at the basics of tapestry weaving and he will show us how to warp up a frame, start off, cast on and off, create shapes, finish. We will also be using more non-traditional materials than "just" yarn and we will see the flexibility and scope of tapestry weaving.

Tapestry frames will be available for purchase from Alastair on the day in cash, he will have new frames for £20 and preloved frames for £10.

After the workshop you should have all the skills you need to go home and get started on your own tapestry works of art.

There will be a small amount of materials on sale on the day for you to take home, such as Swedish wool and rug wool to help you make further tapestries. There will also be a selection of Alasdair's own work and samples, in addition to a few books to view. For a larger collection of his work check his etsy store.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a bathroom?

Yes

Do I need to bring anything?

Nope, unless you already have your own tapestry frame. Please check if it's suitable in advance.

Is there parking?

Yes, there is free parking right outside the entrance and some overflow parking around the back if it's very busy.

Is there food and drink available?

Yes, there are teas/coffees and biscuits available in our kitchen area for a small donation. Otherwise the "Old Post Office Tearoom" around the corner does a lovely soup and sandwich.

Can I just bring a packed lunch?

Of course you can, most of us bring at least a few snacks :)

Can children take part?

Yes, as long as they are with a responsible, ticket holding adult.

Is the venue accessible?

Yes, we have a ramp up to the building from the car park. Internally it is all on one level. The kitchen area and bathrooms are narrow and elderly, they may not be well suited to those using larger mobility aids.
