The aim of this course is to train the delegates in the fundamental principles of functional safety and to get their competency in the application of functional safety standards certified by TÜV SÜD.
The course includes two days of taught modules (with discussion and practical exercises), followed by a half day open book exam.
Delegates who pass the exam can apply for registration as a Functional Safety Engineer in the TÜV SÜD Functional Safety Certification Programme; registration also requires 2 years relevant experience and to have formal education qualification, for example at diploma level or above.
Who Should Attend?
The course is aimed at managers, technicians and design engineers who have responsibilities for safety related control systems of machinery.
By the end of the course delegates should have:
- Gained an awareness of the key parts of the standards EN 62061 and EN ISO 13849-1 including SIL Determination, Performance Levels, Diagnostic Coverage and Common Cause Failures etc, for safety circuit designs.
- Gained an understanding of some of the differences between EN 62061 and EN ISO 13849-1 and the concepts which these standards promote.
- Gained an understandng of the requirements of the standards to deal with the avoidance of systematic errors.
- Been made aware of the architectures of Safety Related Controls, and how these architectures relate to practical applications.
- Gained an appreciation of the importance of component performance and reliability, and how the necessary data can be derived from readily available information.
- Been made aware of the importance of ensuring that any software is sufficiently fre from systematic errors.
- Have an understanding of the importance of verification and validation.

Stewart Robinson is a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and a member of the Institute of Measurement and Control. He has been a member of the Safety Panel of the InstMC since 2007 and currently chairs that Panel. He is also a member of the British Standards Institution committee that deals with machinery safeguarding (MCE/3), and listed as a Functional Safety Expert in the TÜV SÜD certification programme (I.D. TA13010249).
He has been delivering training courses for more than 25 years on various topics, mainly concerned with Industrial Control Systems but also on the general aspects of machinery safety.
