Functional Skills English SUMMER SCHOOL

Improving your English and maths skills can help you in so many ways, from finding employment to improving your earning potential. We can provide you with the tools to successfully communicate an idea or opinion, or divide a restaurant bill amongst friends!

We are pleased to offer a 1-week, intensive class for learners looking to fast-track themselves into completing a level 1 or level 2 Functional skills English qualification.

This course will run Monday to Friday 9.30am - 4.30pm with the final exam being held on the Friday and is available to learners aged 19 and above.

This course is not offered to learners who may be studying at a lower level as the intensive nature of the course is not suited to lower level learners and we would recommend attendance during one of our term-time classes.

Our next classes will begin Monday 15 July until Friday 19 July.

Course Cost

Courses are free as long as you do not already have a qualification at GCSE level in the subject, are aged 19+ and have lived in the E.U. for the past 3 years and have either UK Settled Status or are a U.K. national.

Entry requirements

There are no formal requirements, but the results of initial assessments will be taken into account when deciding on the qualification and level for which you will be entered.

Qualifications

Functional Skills English (Edexcel) Levels 1 and 2

What you'll learn (core modules)

This course will also provide you with English skills in preparation for progressing to GCSE, university and/or employment.

You will be part of a small, friendly classroom and will focus on building everyday practical skills such as letter writing, report writing, the use of formal and informal language and reading techniques. You will also take part in talks and discussions, working towards the reformed qualification in Functional Skills English.

The qualification comprises three assessments: reading, writing and speaking and listening.

How will I be assessed?

Examinations will be taken for reading and writing along with a speaking and listening assessment.

Speaking and listening can be assessed online or face to face. Reading and writing examinations will require attendance at your local West Suffolk College learning centre.

There will be the opportunity to sit mock exams, in preparation, and your tutor will provide written and verbal feedback.

Where is the course delivered? (facilities/classrooms)

This class is planned to take place face to face in the classroom at West Suffolk College in Thetford (The Charles Burrell Centre).

Where will this course take me?

Functional Skills qualifications for Levels 1 and 2 are progression routes towards the GCSE. When a qualification is successfully achieved you will have the option to progress onto a higher level functional skill or a GCSE.

I'm interested. What should I do now?

INDUCTION and ENROLMENT

Once you apply online, your centre team will send you all the information you need to enrol and get set up on your course.

You will undertake online Initial and Diagnostic Assessments to assess the most appropriate level of study. It is vital that you complete this assessment on your own and to the best of your ability.

Your centre team will contact you once this is completed and talk you through your results, the level that has been set and your prior achievement.

You will have the opportunity to agree on your course level, your identification will be confirmed, and the enrolment process completed. However please be aware that it will be the tutor's discretion to change your level if they feel this is not right for you, once you begin your course.
