In the context of marking the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025, the Aston Crisis Management Centre has the pleasure of inviting you to the half-day event “Fund resilience, not disasters” taking place at Aston University on October 15th (Registration starts at 9:00).
The Aston Crisis Management Centre is a research centre focused on the analysis of challenges faced by various stakeholders caused by crises, disasters and disruptions. Our purpose is to provide support and design solutions that can be relevant in practice whilst being academically rigorous. The purpose of this event is to promote discussion about the challenges and new trend in the area to promote resilient communities in the UK and globally. This year we have the pleasure of hosting talks from the UK Resilience Academy and Protection Approaches.
There will also be the possibility to attend one of the three 90-minutes hands-on taster sessions:
· Crisis decision-making in practice - Attendees will immerse themselves into crisis situations and will make decisions based on limited information to understand more about their decisions and the importance of balancing different responses to improve the reaction to urgent situations.
· Crisis Point: Managing Scarcity and Ethical Dilemmas in Emergencies - When resources run out and lives hang in the balance, how do you decide what to do next? In this interactive scenario-based workshop, you’ll work with others to tackle the ethical and practical dilemmas of an overwhelmed emergency response. No medical knowledge is required — just your ability to think under pressure, make tough decisions, and find solutions when none seem ideal.
· Planning Emergency Shelters and Settlements Using Interactive Pedagogy – Attendees will learn about innovative, participatory teaching methods, such as 3D modelling and LEGO-based tools can enhance the capacity of students and emergency professionals to plan sustainable, community-centred shelters and temporary settlements in post-disaster scenarios.
The event is completely free and lunch will be provided. Instructions about getting to the University are available here and detailed instructions about the venue will be sent to registered participants. Please register on the following link to book your place and feel free to invite any of your colleagues who may be interested in attending (booking is required as we have a limited number of spaces).
