This is one part of a series of three online events, ‘Fundamentals of Academic Writing: Foundational Principles and Practical Strategies for International Publication, or ‘How to Write a Paper, not a Lab Report’! that runs Thursdays 05, 12 and 19 May.

With an increased workload often characterising 2nd year + PhD life, an obvious question to ask is: How do I improve my writing strategies to help me with my PhD and beyond?! This is a practical, pragmatic and interactive three-workshop course.

Part 1 explores creating clarity in academic writing through a simple organising principle, which occurs at the level of the sentence, the paragraph and the article or thesis.

This second workshop, Effective Drafting, consists of two parts:

• Part one explores simple ‘rhetorical’ patterns in academic Introductions, Conclusions and Abstracts, which can be used as ‘templates’ to help us persuade and think more effectively.

• Part two is a ‘Writing Work Out’ to help participants draft a thesis chapter or article more efficiently and effectively.

As with a gym workout, this writing one will feature a ‘writing warm-up’, using a strategy to help us calm our ‘inner editor’, a ‘work out’ through the effective drafting strategy of ‘writing in layers’ and then a ‘cool down’ to set us up for the next time we do some writing.

**The intended audience for this course is 2 year + PhDs; while it might be particularly useful to international researchers who have English as an additional language, it has been revelatory for those who have English as their first language and went through the British education system.

The RDF Ref: This workshop offers opportunities to develop skills in Creativity, particularly 'Argument construction' and Communication and Dissemination, as outlined in the RDF subdomains A3 and D2.

The next session, 'Fundamentals of Academic Writing' Part 3: Effective Editing - will take place on Thursday, 19 May 2022, 09:30 - 12.30 hours (UK Time).

Note: while each workshop is the foundation for the next, they are also sufficiently self-contained. Participants will gain most benefit from these sessions if they are able to attend all three events.
