About this event

The webinar will cover basic concepts that engineers should understand when working on projects that require consideration of seismic events, drawing from speaker’s experience of working on the Hinkley Point C and Sizewell Point C nuclear power plant projects.

Keeping the maths to a minimum, Donald will cover the approach to defining and understanding appropriate seismic inputs, some of the analysis options, and the important differences between them.

This lecture will be targeted at young professionals and will not assume any prior knowledge of seismic design.

While Donald's experience is as a civil engineer, the key learnings will be equally applicable to other engineering disciplines involved with seismic analysis.

About the Speaker:

Donald Freeke is a civil technical lead for EDF new build projects in the UK with nearly 11 years of diverse industry experience, including over five years in the nuclear sector. He possesses expertise in structural analysis and the design of steel, concrete, and timber structures, adhering to UK, American, and European standards.

Donald’s career includes international assignments, notably a six-month tenure as a site engineer in Saudi Arabia and three years in Japan contributing to the UK ABWR Project. In addition to his strong technical foundation, he has successfully led and delivered projects in both Discipline Lead and Job Leader capacities.

He holds chartered status with both the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), a distinction he earned at the age of 25. In recognition of his early contributions to the field, he was awarded third place in the IStructE Young Engineer of the Year competition in 2010.
