For PhD students who have teaching commitments of between 6 and 29 hours in the current academic year, this 'Fundamentals of Teaching' workshop allows further development of essential aspects of teaching.

Attendees should have some experience of teaching. Students with no teaching experience should attend the Start to Teach one-day workshop.

Aims and objectives

The workshop consists of 2 x 3 hour workshops.
Please note: Attendees must be available to attend both workshops.

Session 1

14.00- 17.00, room TBC

  • Ways of planning and organising a teaching session

  • An introduction to some pedagogic theories

  • Development of pedagogic principles in teaching and learning.

Session 2

Thursday 14th November 2019

14.00- 17.00, room TBC

  • Strategies to engage students in seminars

  • Barriers to learning and strategies for supporting students

  • Coping with possible interactions in the classroom

  • An opportunity for participants to share experiences and challenges.

Format of the meeting

The two sessions are largely interactive, drawing on participants’ experiences of teaching and learning.

Who is this event for?

  • The workshop provides an essential introduction to teaching for attendees who are just beginning teaching or who are considering future teaching activities e.g. PhD students who are beginning teaching as Graduate Teaching Assistants or as Associate Tutors.

  • Students who have not undertaken any teaching are advised to register for one of the Start to Teach workshops. Priority will be given to attendees with teaching commitments of 6 – 29 hours in the current academic year.

Please note: PhD students with teaching commitments of 30 hours or more per year are able to apply to the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education but may find these Fundamentals of Teaching workshops a useful introduction.
