About this event
This is the fourth of four training workshops to be delivered by Gareth Kiddie, a community
regeneration consultant with first-hand experience of managing community halls.
What is the aim of the workshop?
The workshop aims to explore with participants the things that help to make a Hall
financial viable and sustainable, focussing on: Developing your Hall’s strategy, business
planning, budgeting and fundraising.
Who is the workshop for?
Hall committee members, trustees, paid staff and volunteers.
When will the workshop be held?
Wednesday 8th June 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm
How will the workshop be delivered?
The workshop will be delivered online via MS Teams. It will be split into two sessions
with a short comfort break in between.
Session 1: Strategy, planning and budgeting
Community Halls are not always regarded as businesses, but they most definitely operate in
a business-like way in order to serve the needs of their communities. This session will look
at how a Community Hall might go about planning for its future in a strategic way drawing
lessons from the business sector.
Developing a strategy
o An exploration of the key factors that a Hall should consider when planning for the
longer term, together with a run through on how a hall might develop a ‘business’
strategy.
Business planning and income generation
o A look at how to go about developing and writing a business plan for your hall – with
a focus on the financials and the construction of a simple income and expenditure
profile.
Comfort break
Session 2: Fundraising
Getting the money rolling in is always a key challenge. This session will look beyond income
generation through hall hire, focussing on other possibilities, most especially capital and
revenue grants.
Approaches to fundraising
o Consideration of the potential fundraising options open to community halls and
getting the ‘fundraising mix’ right for your hall.
Fundraising from grants
o A look at some of the grant opportunities available and tips & tricks for making
successful grant applications.
Discussion and Q&A
The consultant will deliver the workshop using a PowerPoint presentation to provide
structure, but will be looking to engage participants through Q&A sessions throughout.
The presentation will include a range of good practice case studies and all participants will
receive both the presentation and supplementary notes immediately afterwards. These
notes will include references to further reading and other online material that can be
accessed following the workshop.
