The Sheffield-Palestine Skateboard Exchange Project is an education and sports science project developed and managed by a small team, mainly from Sheffield. It is a project within Skatepal ( http://www.skatepal.co.uk/ ) which is a non-profit UK based organisation. Since 2013, Skatepal has been working with communities throughout Palestine to enhance the lives of young people and promote the benefits of skateboarding. Its ongoing presence and award-winning projects have reached hundreds of young people across the West Bank and won acclaim and recognition from supporters around the world. Skatepal’s Founder and Executive Director is Charlie Davis. The organisation is run by a committed team of local and international volunteers who, through teaching skate classes, building skateparks and providing equipment, is enabling an ever-growing number of Palestinian skaters to empower themselves and inspire the next generation of Palestinian youth.

Sheffield has teamed up with Skatepal as young people from Sheffield have gone to Palestine to help Skatepal build skateparks, teach skate classes and undertake research on skateboarding in Palestine and Sheffield. The project involves The House Skatepark (http://www.thehouseskatepark.co.uk/ ) whose gift of a skateboard was presented to one of Skatepal’s skateparks by Paul Blomfield, MP and Julie Pearn, Sheffield activist, when they visited Palestine in 2017. Douglas Mascarenhas-Keyes helped to build two Skatepal skateparks, and the owner of The House Skatepark (Rob Bannister) and one of the coaches (Nick Mosley) participated in an Arts and Sports festival in Nablus, Palestine in 2018 where they gave skateboard demonstrations and ran classes. The project plans to send Rob and a coach in 2019 to Palestine to build contacts and run further classes.

The project committee also includes Dr. Dani Abulhawa, a senior lecturer from Sheffield Hallam University who is of Palestinian heritage. She has undertaken research on skateboarding in Skatepal skateparks in Palestine and at The House. She has presented several academic papers on her research, including at The Human Rights Futures Conference organised by Sheffield Hallam University in December 2018. Dr Stella Mascarenhas-Keyes, a social scientist, is developing education projects in Palestine.

As well as sending people from Sheffield to Palestine, the project is planning to work with a local NGO in Palestine and bring young people to Sheffield in 2020 for two to four weeks. The House Skatepark will provide them with training in Skate Park Creation Skills; Skate Tuition and Community Development and Media Training/Event Planning. The young people will be hosted by families in Sheffield and will give public talks about their life in Palestine and the significance of skateboarding to them.

Funds raised for the project will reside in a ring-fenced audited account in Skatepal and will be used to pay for expenses connected with the exchange programme.

For further information, and if you would like to be involved, please contact Stella Mascarenhas-Keyes 07913901776; stellamaskey123@hotmail.co.uk
