Event description

Description

Funeral poverty is on the rise across the UK. One in six people say they struggle with funeral costs, and funeral poverty reached a record £160 million last year.

The financial pressures associated with funerals can make an already difficult time overwhelming for bereaved families and loved ones – causing additional stress on top of existing grief and leaving a lasting negative impact on their health and wellbeing.

With Northern Ireland’s death rate projected to increase rapidly over the next 20 years, how can we better support bereaved loved ones around funeral debt? What is the role of regional and local government? And what are the consequences for bereaved families and loved ones if we don’t tackle funeral poverty?

On 14 May 2018, Marie Curie will bring together a panel of expert speakers to explore these crucial issues and more. Marking Dying Matters Week, the event will look at some of the factors that contribute towards funeral poverty, its impact on bereaved loved ones and how we can help address the issue in Northern Ireland.

Attendees will hear from:

  • Cara English – Fair Funerals Campaign Officer, Quaker Social Action

  • Joan McEwan – Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Marie Curie Northern Ireland

  • Sarah McCully Russell – Information and Policy Officer, Citizens Advice Northern Ireland

  • Lindsay Fergus – Journalist, The Detail

The event will be chaired by Carla Lockhart MLA, former Chair of the All Party Group on Funerals and Bereavement in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Everyone should have the right to a dignified funeral which does not force their loved ones into significant and harmful debt. With funeral poverty across the UK now at record levels, it is crucial that regional and local government, the charity sector, the funeral industry and other stakeholders in Northern Ireland work together to better support bereaved families and loved ones to avoid funeral debt.
