Event description

Description

'Funeral poverty’ regularly hits the news. The Sun Life Cost of Dying Report and the Royal London National Funeral Costs Index annually chart increases in the costs of funerals. Lobby groups have argued that funeral costs are not transparent, and the social security system does not make payments to cover funeral costs in their entirety. As a consequence, some families are falling into debt. What sense can we make of the notion of funeral poverty? What factors underlie the problems that some families face in meeting a funeral bill? And what should we do about it?

Speaker biography: Dr Julie Rugg is a Senior Research Fellow at the Cemetery Research Group, University of York. She has researched widely and published extensively on the history of and policy issues relating to death, funerals and cemeteries.
