Led by Dr. Stuart Skeates, Devon Fungus Group.
Dr. Skeates, a retired General Practitioner of medicine, has been a mycologist for around 40 years having been introduced to fungi by his late friend, Professor Richard Fortey, FRS of the Natural History Museum and author of ‘Close Encounters of the Fungal Kind – In Pursuit of Remarkable Mushrooms’ (2024). Before moving to Devon and joining the Devon Fungus Group, Stuart led the Hampshire Fungus Group, and was formerly a trustee of the British Mycological Society (BMS). He remains actively involved with the BMS through managing the Fungal Records Database of Britain and Ireland (http://www.frdbi.org.uk).
With such a rich background in the fascinating world of mycology, Sidmouth Science Festival are delighted to have Dr. Skeates lead a Fungal Foray around Mutter’s Moor and introduce the attendees to some of the, perhaps weird and wonderful, fungi that live in the vicinity, albeit only visible for a short period of the year.
Please wear suitable footwear and clothing for woodland and heathland terrain. The walk may include uneven and potentially slippy ground, including inclines and declines on gravel, dirt/mud tracks and grass.
