Event description
Fungi identification, gathering and cooking in East Sussex

About this Event

Note: Covid 19 course adaptions. Places are limited to 10 participants to allow for ease of maintaining personal distance. Hand sanitizer and disposable gloves available. for use when and if appropriate.

Suitable for those with both beginner or intermediate level fungi knowledge. Also includes more advanced cooking/preservation methods.

Beginning at 10 am and concluding around 5/6 pm, we will be foraging in different fungal habitats, for example, woodlands of various kinds as well as grassland (exact locations will depend on the quality/quantity of available fungi I spot when doing a recce the day before). The aim is to provide a general introduction to seasonally available fungi, how to harvest them sustainably and how to utilize them as food and medicine, as well as how to recognise and avoid poisonous species. I will also introduce, with hands on examples in some cases, how to use fungi for other purposes such as painting, dyeing, ink making, paper making. Whether you have children or not, such an added exploration is a really positive way to introduce fungi to them, bypassing the mycophobic culture of fear that abides in British culture. A 3 course wild-food-based and end-of-forage meal will be provided to finish the day. This will be served either in the woods or around the table indoors, with a range of deliciously cooked seasonal wild mushrooms that you will have collected (so please bring snacks or a sandwich for lunch). We will also work with some excellent fungi identification keys, as well as a range of guide books. Much of fungi identification using the naked eye rather than microscopes (that is, identification in the field – metaphorically and literally) is about a balance of probabilities that point to a particular species. The keys that we will use are excellent ones that, if used, will greatly aid your on-going confidence in beginning to accurately and systematically correctly identify a particular fungus down to genus level whilst out on your own.

Q: Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

A: YesQ: Can you provide a gift voucher in addition to just the Eventbrite ticket?A: Yes I can, although it is my hope that you'd feel inspired to get creative and make one, perhaps using photos and pictures from my website.

Q: Where do courses take place?A: Fungi course: We will be meeting at Blean Walk (for Canterbury courses - see exact location on the course page) and at Broadstone car park, Ashdown Forest (for Forest Row courses - see exact location on the course page.) In the former case, those without cars arriving by train will be picked up from Chestfield & Swalecliffe train station, an in the latter case those without cars will be picked up from East Grinstead train station.

Q: How long does it take to get there from central London by train an by car?A: From London Victoria to East Grinstead, by train, 58 mins (1 hr 35 mins if driving)

Q: Hello. Your courses / experiences look fantastic, i wanted to buy them as a gift for my mum and dad. They are both quite active and enjoy walking etc, but i'd like to understand first how much walking, steps, bending down, crawling about on hands and knees are involved in the day?A: There are many rests as we stop to harvest, taste, or talk about fungi. Gathering fungi does involve bending down, but this is not essential for identification.

Q: Do I need to be very fit to take part?A: A general average to good level of fitness is required. Having said that, I have had several people that don’t quite meet this ideal and it has still been fine. There is no really sustained walking as there are constant pauses to collect or talk about individual fungi. It may be muddy though, uneven underfoot, an steep in places.

Q: Who attends the courses, and can I come on my own?A: Only the best and most discerning people attend my course! The courses are for adults, although occasionally older children do attend. People come from all walks of life, some with lots of fungi knowledge, but most with just a bit or almost none. Individuals come on their own, Couples come, as do family and friends, so the group on the day will be a mix of people.

Q: How much does the course cost?A: Fungi Forays: (9am-6pm) £135 per person.

Q: Do I need to take notes or take pictures with my camera?Q: You are free to take notes and pictures. Although I send out considerable post-course information (sometimes) to include photos of all we have seen (if possible) that includes links to further information, it can be useful, of course, to take your own notes and pictures of individual plants in the order that we find them.

Q: Can I bring my dog, it's only very small and won’t be a problem?A: Yes, if it is a mild mannered dog that wont disturb other course participant

Q: Can I bring my pet tarantula? His name is Taranto, and he loves to get down inside peoples underwear and tickle them?A:Yes, that sounds like a great plan.

Q: Can you recommend a place to stay the night before/after the course?A: Please scroll down to the bottom of this page for some possibilities.

Please note: I have not stayed in any of them, it is just a list I collated, some of them, if you are lucky, may be like Faulty Towers.
