Event description

Description

Welcome to Future Debates, a series of public events supported by the British Science Association (BSA) and in conjunction with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in Caithness, Sutherland and Orkney as well as the Rotary Club of Thurso.

Our hosts at Farr High School will have a parliamentarian type debate with teams drawn from the local community around Farr, Tongue, Melvich and Altnaharra. They will be judged by a panel drawn from the local community and by business leaders.

This year's debate is on the topic of science funding and who does it:

  • Does it matter if private companies fund science?
  • Does private funding create bias in the research?
  • How can we trust researchers?

Open to the Public and free.

Complimentary refreshments are available afterwards.

Future Debates events are part of the British Science Association's work to make science a fundamental part of British society and culture. We want to empower many more people – not just scientists – to constructively engage in debates over the applications and implications of science in their lives, their local economy and the UK’s future.

Aggregated data will be used in our evaluation report and to inform the debate.
