Local Governance Review – what is it?

On the 07 December 2017, the Scottish Government announced its intention to conduct a Local Governance Review (LGR) which aims to make sure local communities have more say about how public services in their area are run.

The review will involve hearing from communities all across the country to get a clear understanding of the type of changes that they wish to see, and how these can be made to happen.

The Scottish Government will undertake their consultation in two stages with the first aimed primarily at communities to better understand how decisions and their impacts are taken at community level. This consultation has yet to commence and is anticipated to run over the spring and into the summer of this year.

The second stage of the consultation will be aimed primarily at Community Planning Partnerships and public sector organisations and will commence later and anticipated to finish around October 2018.

Argyll and Bute

Our area is vast and diverse and whilst there are many similarities across our communities, each place is unique. Effective local democracy is important and can have a real impact on people’s lives. The Scottish Government’s consultation will undoubtedly be far reaching in its geography and it is yet to be known how many events will be held in Argyll and Bute.

Council officers are keen that as many people as possible voice their views on the future of public services for their communities.

Future of Public Services – Your Voice

Over the spring and early summer this year, a community engagement team led by Cleland Sneddon Chief Executive will be visiting many of our islands and mainland communities to hear directly from communities their thoughts on the future of public services. This will be an ambitious and extensive engagement programme and is designed to recognise the unique challenges for democracy in our communities and more importantly, ensure we recognise, develop and embrace the opportunities to make a difference.

In addition, a web chat session has been scheduled for those who are unable to attend one of the other local roadshows being held. This online event will start at 5pm and conclude around 7pm.
