Event description
Diversifying the Future City

About this Event

This is the third of the seminars funded by the Urban Studies Foundation which bring together two distinct strands of research, future urbanisms and eco-communities, with the aim of extending and strengthening our understandings of the potential ecological future of cities. You can read more about the full seminar series here: /https://eco-communities.blog/ .

The focus of this seminar is on inclusions and exclusions of eco-communities in the broader context of diversifying urban futures. Drawing on postcolonial urbanism and research into who is included in visions of future eco-cities (Datta 2012; Kraftl et al., 2013; Christensen et al. 2017) the current exclusivity of many eco-communities will be re-examined and the possibility of adopting different strategies to broaden inclusion explored. Therefore this seminar focuses on opening up questions of who participates in eco-communities and, in relation, who is part of the future urbanisms.

Keynote speaker: Dr Ayona Datta, UCL London

Ayona Datta examines critical geographies of smart urbanism, gender citizenships and urban futures in the global south, particularly India. She is particularly interested in transformations in gender relations and citizenship that emerge through urban development and the social, political and environmental spaces that are occupied in these processes of change. She is currently undertaking a number of funded research projects on postcolonial urbanism, exploring smart cities as experiments in urban innovation and digital citizenships.
