About this event

About the Race Aware 6-part (8-session, 23hour) programme.

We also offer further affordable options too as don't want that to be a barrier to access this important competence training. Please get in touch ma@paththerapy.co.uk.

You can find a full description of the programme here: https://empoweringyourtherapy.com/antiracist-training/

This race, culture and antidiscrimination core competence training is for all counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists and mental health professionals (including trainees). All parts are suitable for all in the helping profession. The training is self-certified as being compliant to the following standards.

Antiracism and culture core competence framework for therapists (TADF)

• BAME Positive Practice Guide (BABCP) including IAPT

This training is important part of our antiracist advocacy work to improve standards of competence in race and culture as it contributes to inequality in the helping profession. Research and lived experiences states diverse heritage clients experience disparities in access, outcome and have much more negative experiences of therapy. Your support is much needed and appreciated. The training is also suitable for self-development.

Logistics

This booking (Group 12) is for all 6-parts (23 hours, 8 consecutive weekly sessions, Wednesday 6.30pm weekly at same time. Note sessions are 2.5 or 3 hours long). Any missed sessions can be taken as part of different group or later date. We charge an affordable rate of £9/hour to balance cost, quality and numbers. If this is not affordable please make contact.

This training will be delivered by qualified therapists with lived in experience of racial-cultural difference and with extensive experience of diverse racial-cultural client work, advocacy, theory, research and race based group work (UKCP, BACP, etc..).

Within Part-3 Group Work only 1 session may be missed otherwise a new Group will need to be taken. You must complete all 6-parts to register with us as a "Race Aware" therapist. This is a diverse heritage group and safe spaces will be provided alongside as needed.

You can find a full description of the programme here: https://empoweringyourtherapy.com/antiracist-training/

Part 1: The challenge of seeing the racial and/or cultural Other in therapy (2.5-hour) with Mamood Ahmad (UKCP Reg)

“If you can’t see me through my race and culture then you don’t see me. And if you don’t see me then you don’t see how I see you.” ~ Unknown

Please note this training is for trainees and qualified therapists as well as mental health professionals in the UK.

This session will orient you to the core tenets and journey of becoming an anti-discriminatory race & culture-aware therapist, and ask both individually and collectively: what will you need to do to “see” clients who are racially and/or culturally diverse to you?

We will explore the contextual themes which shape racio-cultural "otherness" such as power relations, systemic and indirect discrimination, racio-cultural identity crisis, and lived-in experiences for client groups whose house is structured differently to your own with its own epistemological frame of reference.

We hope to kickstart your reflective process so you can make the leap towards racio-cultural anti-discriminatory practice.

Further details about this programme:

Training consists of six parts (23 hours live training) and follows a research led racio-cultural growth model of personal development. The focus is on experiential learning, case studies, group encounter, race and culture dialogue, interactive reflection, and role play. After completing Part 6 there will be an optional short (choice of verbal or written) assessment to declare “Race Aware” competence to enable clients to find antiracist therapists and be listed on our website. It is recommended you follow the modules in sequence. Part 1 must always be completed first. You may take parts selectively if you wish but need to complete all parts to register as a race aware therapist.

Refunds: due to limited spaces refunds only in form of alternative space offered.

Mamood Ahmad is a UKCP registered clinical psychotherapist, workplace speaker on mental health and therapy, and upcoming author of ‘AntiRacist Counselling: Becoming & Being’ (Provisional title) If you have any feedback, please send it to ma@paththerapy.co.uk.
