Our 2-hour Introductory Course is crafted to provide professionals with a foundational understanding of Honour Based Abuse and Forced Marriage, set within the context of honour-related norms and expectations. This course offers an interactive learning experience with dedicated time for Q+A at the end. Explore key topics, including:

  • Understanding Honour Based Abuse: Explore how power dynamics within families and communities contribute to honour based abuse, recognising signs of control and coercion influenced by honour related norms.
  • Influence of Family, Community, and Societal Nuances: Understand the impact of family structures, community pressures, and societal attitudes on perpetuating honour based abuse, highlighting the role of expectations in shaping behaviour.
  • Differentiating Arranged Marriages from Forced Marriages: Gain a clear understanding of what constitutes a forced marriage and an arranged marriage, exploring the complexities of coercion when considering vulnerabilities and any ‘grey areas’.
  • Introduction to Child Marriage Law: Gain insight into legal frameworks addressing child marriage, recognising the consequences and risks associated with child marriage and duties to safeguard and prevent. Present animation on new law.
  • Forced Marriage Protection Orders (FMPOs): Discuss the use and implementation of Forced Marriage Protection Orders, including the use of a monitoring plan to ensure you are equipped to support victims effectively.
  • Identification of Criminal Offences: Identify criminal offences related to Honour Based Abuse, and the procedures to report
  • Legislative Changes Identify changes including recent legislation addressing practices like virginity testing and hymenoplasty.​ Present animation on ‘virginity myths’.
  • Recognising Barriers for Victim experiencing HBA: Explore the emotional and psychological impact on victims, including barriers to seeking help such as social stigma and fear, and learn strategies for providing empathetic support and assistance.
  • Prevalence of HBA across the UK: Gain a basic understanding of prevalence rates and demographic factors contributing to honour based abuse, acknowledging the significance of data in advocacy and policymaking efforts.
