Event description

Description

Having guardianship or powers of attorney in place can be essential for families of young people who will continue to need support in managing daily living or in communicating their wishes into adulthood. This workshop will equip you to decide what can best meet your family’s needs now and in the future.

Who should attend

Parents/carers of young people aged approximately 12-18 with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

About the workshop

You will:

  • Learn the difference between guardianship and powers of attorney, and which is most appropriate for your family member
  • Consider the role of guardians and attorneys, and who should – or shouldn’t – be appointed
  • Discover the principles underpinning current legislation and what this means for you
  • Find out about the processes involved, and when you need to act
  • Learn about what happens if circumstances change

Attendees will also have the opportunity to arrange a free individual consultation at another time to review your legal position and advise on your needs.

Over lunch, you will be able to talk to other families facing the same issues, and help us identify what parents and carers need to feel more confident in preparing for the future.

Led by:

Tracey Francis (Transitions Officer, Contact a Family) and Donald Winskill (Associate, Gillespie Macandrew), working with B.A.N.G. Borders Additional Needs Group.

We may be able to provide assistance with expenses: please contact us if this would be helpful.
