Event description

Description

Within the Gallery we are presented with many faces of death, from the moving to the macabre. Whether it’s the Mausoleum where the founders of the Gallery are buried or commemorative portraits, join us to explore our complex and contradictory attitudes to this emotive subject. Expect everything from talks and tours to death cafés, memento mori workshops and macabre salons.

BitterSuite

An experience which uncovers the hidden human stories embedded in the mausoleum walls. Intertwining sound, vibration and poetry BitterSuite and Kayo Chingonyi bring the mausoleum walls to life for the ears and skin of the audience.

#LifeDeathWhatever

Life. Death. Whatever. will be taking over the beautiful Christ's Chapel to present an evening of inspiring and thought-provoking 20 minute talks from people who are determined to change the dialogue around death and dying. Curated by funeral director Louise Winter and end-of-life doula Anna Lyons, expect the unexpected.

DIY Memento Mori and Vanitas Collages with Art Macabre

Remember remember that you too will die. Create your own contemporary twist on traditional memento mori with Art Macabre. Take a moment to reflect on your mortality and what matters in life to you. Cut and paste imagery to design your own personalised pictorial reminder of life, death and the passing of time. A drop-in workshop led by Art Macabre's director Nikki Shaill and team.

Coffin Playroom

Try them out for size and play in the multi-coloured coffin ball pool. Coffin selfie anyone?

#UNSAID

Is there something you're not saying? What didn't you say? #Unsaid is a project from #lifedeathwhatever encouraging everyone to share the words that have been left unsaid. It can be in any form, whether that's postcard, post-it or just plain paper. Whatever you haven't said, say it here.

Please note

Your ticket includes all Lates activities and entry to the Permanent Collection. A discounted £5 ticket add on is available for the Tove Jansson (1914-2001) exhibition. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the 'Tickets' button above or at the Gallery admissions desk on the night. Friends do not need to purchase add-on exhibition tickets and can access the exhibition free of charge.
