Join Devon-based photographer Caitlin Pharoah for an exclusive evening celebrating her project, Hidden Figures of the South West.
The event begins with a private viewing of the gallery exhibition, followed by a talk and book signing with Caitlin.
Hidden Figures of the South West showcases over 150 portraits honouring individuals in under-recognised professions — from conservationists and traditional artisans to artists and makers — whose skills and contributions risk fading into obscurity. With camera in hand, Caitlin has climbed barnacle-covered rocks to witness seaweed harvesters at work, explored the intricate ecosystems of mushroom farms, and listened to the wisdom of those preserving ancient crafts.
Each portrait is paired with words written by the ‘Hidden Figures’ themselves, revealing the human stories behind their professions and offering a layered insight into lives often overlooked. These images and narratives not only celebrate tradition and craft but also highlight the urgent need to preserve skills and knowledge disappearing with each generation.
During the talk, Caitlin will share stories from her photographic journey, discuss the making of the book, and reflect on why recognising these professions matters for our collective future. The evening will conclude with an audience Q&A and the opportunity to have your copy of Hidden Figures of the South West signed.
