Galley Beggar Press Independent Thread: "Truth and Fiction in an Alt-Fact W...
Sat 27 May 2017, 13:30 – 14:30 BST
There are few better places for exploring the boundaries of reality than in fiction – and few better times than now, in our supposedly post-truth world, to look at its strange and unsettling possibilities. Paul Stanbridge (the University of Greenwich’s writer-in-residence, author of Forbidden Line – a modern-day retelling of Don Quixote – winner of the 2017 RoC First Novel Prize and longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize) and Eley Williams (author of the short story collection Attrib.) have both written books that explore this theme. As authors of debut fiction busily garnering awards and critical acclaim – Williams being called a “writer like no other working today” and Stanbridge the author of a “Breath-taking, lavish, magisterial comic masterpiece” – this discussion of fiction, and how the manipulation of structure and language can be used as a means to tell us something about our own lives, is sure to be fascinating.
