The topic: Gallicisms of Structure

English and French have many words that look alike but whose meanings do not precisely overlap. Good translators learn to identify them and avoid the traps they lay. This presentation, however, seeks to go one step further by identifying structures that are fundamentally French and that can make your English translation sound odd if left unchanged. Using examples from actual jobs, we will identify how we can make the copy flow more naturally in English.

The trainer: Grant Hamilton

A Canadian translator, writer and published author, Grant Hamilton first came to the attention of the UK translation community as one of the speakers at the Translate in Cambridge conference in 2016, then again when he presented a seminar for ITI in 2020 on the mistakes translators make with verbs.

Grant worked for many years as the founder and president of Anglocom, a translation agency in Quebec City, Canada, specialising mainly in advertising and marketing. Today Anglocom is a division of TRSB, where Grant works as a senior linguist and trainer. He is also an instructor for Magistrad and Quebec’s order of certified translators, and he taught for six years in New York University’s translation certificate program.

In 2009, Grant received the American Translators Association’s Alicia Gordon Award for creativity in translation.
