Games For Better
Games For Better is a 48 hour game jam which aims to highlight the effectiveness of games in raising awareness and understanding about important issues. It will set a group of game devs the challenge of building games that approach important, global issues, with the power and engagement that only games can provide.
The theme for the Games For Better jam is 'Antibiotic Resistance', an international issue and a genuine threat to humanity that has recently gained significant press coverage due to new cases of untreatable illnesses being discovered. The public stands to benefit from the raising of awareness and understanding about the issue, and that's where you come in. We're looking for developers to show up, learn a bit about this subject from professionals in the field, and then jam some prototypes designed to educate or inform the player about these issues.
An Opportunity To Promote Your Work
Aside from being a chance for developers to tackle an interesting subject whilst sharpening their game jam skills, we intend to offer additional opportunities to those taking part.
This event is being run in collaboration with Venturefest South West, a flagship event for innovators, entrepreneurs and investors in the technology sector, being held at Sandy Park, Exeter on the 18th of October. Venturefest looks to bring together hundreds of talented small enterprise innovators and entrepreneurs from across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset along with investors on the lookout for emerging talent. It is our aim to give those developers who take part in Games For Better a chance to get their own place alongside these innovators, and to show off their work to potential investors.
To this end, once the smoke clears and the 48 hours is up, we'll be asking you to submit what you've built to us, to be considered by our panel of judges. Our judges will pick out 3 - 4 winning entries, and those developers will be asked to take part in Venturefest SW. On the day this involves giving a 5-10 minute presentation to attendees about their design, their finished product, and their aims.
Aside from the GFB session on stage there are plenty of other talks, workshops and opportunities to network with entrepreneurs and investors from around the South West which you can take advantage of.
Not only that, but a showreel of footage from all the game's submitted, alongside information on the developers, will be running at the Games For Better stall throughout the event.
Venturefest South West is a completely free event, and you can sign up to attend at the Eventbrite page.
