Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

This free event all about storytelling.

You will hear stories of adventure, impact and change from different speakers about their gap year.

Some of our speakers may have travelled the world, volunteered overseas and been exposed to new cultures; others may have stayed in the UK to simply gain experience or pursue a passion.

If you’re thinking about taking a gap year, or undecided about what your next steps are after school, then come along!

Meet the speakers!

Sarah Cusack

Sarah began her gap year in 2012 in mainland Malaysia, before heading to Malaysian Borneo where she spent three months volunteering on a Raleigh Expedition.

From there, she started a popular blog called Roaming Sarah, travelled to several countries across South-East Asia and spent time living with an off-grid, sustainable community in Australia as well as exploring New Zealand’s north and south islands.

After her initial gap year and a short trip home, she returned to live and work in Melbourne and on a fresh produce farm in Queensland, Australia before a four-month trip to India and two months of beachfront living in Cambodia.

Since returning home to England in January 2015, Sarah has launched a successful career with commercial real estate publication and data business EG, part of FTSE 100 RELX Group.

Rasheeda Page-Muir

Rasheeda’s gap year wasn’t a typical one to say the least…

She spoke at two TEDx events, helped establish an organisation that provides a space for young people to come together and talk about issues that are important to them, and worked on building up her writing and speaking portfolio.

And she also had some spare time to travel in South Africa!

In October 2016, Rasheeda decided to drop out of university, so her gap year was far from planned.

But now reaching the end of her gap year, she says “it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made”.

Poppy Rodriquez

Poppy took her year out in 2015 after finishing her A-levels.

During her year out, she worked and travelled to South America, Nepal, Sydney and Canada.

Since returning from her adventure filled gap year, Poppy has been reading History and Politics at the University of Birmingham.
