Event description

Description

Sponsored by Saint-Gobain PAM in conjunction with the Sheffield Water Centre, this competition offers the opportunity for University of Sheffield students to develop innovations for water sustainability that could be applied to the Spitalgate Heath Garden Village in Lincolnshire.

Students can enter as indvididuals and then be allocated into a team, or as a team of up to 4.

BACKGROUND

The UK government has announced the creation of many new Garden Towns and Villages around the country. These new communities have the potential to demonstrate a more sustainable way of living, working and playing across multiple facets, including water.

Spitalgate Heath Garden Village will be located near Grantham in Lincolnshire. The area covers approximately 224 hectares and will include residential, employment, community, green space, recreation, and school land uses. Spitalgate Heath Garden Village will also form part of the Grantham blue-green corridor, with access to the River Witham, cycle and walking routes.

COMPETITION DETAILS

  • Working in teams of no more than 4 students, develop innovative concepts, products, policies or plans for water sustainability in the Spitalgate Heath Garden Village. Teams must be registered by 10 February 2018.
  • There are no restrictions on the scale or type of sustainable water innovation, which could range from a household level (e.g. water efficient home) to the village level (e.g. land use plan to maximise rainwater collection). Innovations can include technological and social concepts and do not need to currently exist, but must be demonstrated to be feasible in the future as part of the competition entry.
  • Each team will develop one A0-sized poster (in pdf format) for entry into the competition. The deadline for entry is 20 April 2018.
  • Poster entries will be shortlisted and the selected finalists will be notified by 27 April 2018. Finalists will be invited to develop and present a 10-minute pitch to a panel of judges at an event to be held on Thursday 3 May 2018. The panel of judges will include representatives from Spitalgate Heath Garden Village, South Kesteven District Council, Anglian Water, Saint-Gobain PAM, and the University of Sheffield.

The winning team will receive the grand prize of £1,000. The winning entry and runners-up will be publicised in the local and national press and through the website www.watershedissues.co.uk
