Description
Pete Smith, Independent architectural and garden historian
The Gardens of Wollaton Hall, Nottingham
6.30 pm, Wednesday 17 January, The Gallery, 77 Cowcross Street, EC1M 6EL
This talk will cover the history of the gardens at Wollaton Hall from 1580 to the present day. Though much altered in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the outline of Robert Smythson's original concept for the gardens and John Smythson's additions of 1618 can still be recognised and at least partially reconstructed. Whilst the later history and the surviving additions made by Sir Jeffrey Wyatville, including the famous Camelia House added in 1823, will be examined in detail.
