Gathering in the Knowledge - a workshop for midwives
If you’re anything like most midwives, the chances are that you never feel quite as up-to-date with recent research and knowledge as you’d like to. You’ve got a pile of things to read and you’ve got no idea when you’ll be able to get round to them. You keep hearing about new ideas that you’d like to look into further, and you really want to look up more about a couple of things, but then your phone or pager goes off and it never quite happens…
If this sounds familiar, then my latest workshop, Gathering in the Knowledge, might be just what you need! I wanted to help midwives to feel more up-to-date and on top of the latest research and evidence, as well as having time to catch up with themselves and chat to colleagues about the implications of this evidence for practice, so I have put together a day of presentations, activities and discussion topics which will help you do just that. If you want to chat about the hands on/off debate, ponder the latest data on induction or just get an overview of what’s hot and what’s not, we’ve got it covered!
We’ll begin with a tour of the very latest birth-related research, from pregnancy through to postpartum, so you’ll feel up-to-date and on top of what’s new. We’ll create space to discuss how this relates to practice and what we might do about it and we’ll practice and hone critical appraisal skills by having a look at one key ‘hot topic’ paper in depth. (I’ll send that out beforehand so you can read it before you come if you’d like to). We’ll round out the day with regular refreshment breaks with time for networking, a nourishing lunch and lots of positively-focused discussion. There will even be a small craft activity for those who would like to partake!

Venues, dates and times...
This workshop runs in Queenstown, New Zealand, on Thursday 27th April 2017. Please be aware that I am doing other workshops in NZ on the same trip … tickets are being sold separately for each workshop, but you can find an overview of all of my current workshops and dates at www.sarawickham.com/travel
The venue is St John Queenstown, which is at 10 Douglas Street, and you should find a map (which should let you get directions from your starting point) at the bottom of this page. (Please always check this before setting out though; satnavs are notorious for disagreeing with each other and with google maps!)
You are welcome to arrive and register anytime from 8.45am, and the workshop will begin promptly at 9.15am. We will finish at 4.30pm, and the session titles and full timetable are in the next section.
We will provide you with lunch and all refreshments. If you’d like us to cater for an allergy or dietary preference, please make sure you let us know when you book.
The number of places available is limited, and because I will be flying internationally for this workshop, we will need to close registration a few days before the event :)
Sessions and timetable...
The day will be divided into four sessions as below. The sessions incorporate a mixture of facilitator-led information sharing and small and large group discussions, with plenty of time for questions and reflection. Tea/coffee and lunch breaks give you a further chance to reflect on learning, catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Travel and transport...
Our venue has been hand-picked and has lots of free parking! You can see where it is on the map below. If you are not local and need help, or if you would like to travel with other participants, we have created an ‘event’ for this workshop on my facebook page, which is at www.facebook.com/saramidwife and where you can post a message to see if anyone else is coming from your area. Please don’t use facebook or twitter to message us about the workshop though; we don’t always get notifications and it is always best to email us.
The cost of the workshop is $225. This includes the workshop itself, lunch and refreshments throughout the day, handouts, access to related online resources, craft materials, and a certificate of attendance. This workshop is approved by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand as elective education and has been allocated five points.
We have a special ‘Early Bird’ price of $200 which will be available until September 30, 2016.
Cancellation, transfer and refund policy...
We are unfortunately not able to refund tickets for this workshop once they have been purchased, but we know how it is to be a midwife, so if you should find that you are unable to come, you are very welcome to transfer your ticket to another midwife (that is, give it away or sell it) at any time before the workshop. If you don’t have a friend or colleague who would like to use your ticket, you are very welcome to offer your ticket for sale via the event facility on Sara's facebook page. Please be aware that, because we are travelling internationally to this workshop, we will not be able to respond to email as quickly as usual in the week or two leading up to the workshop.
If we have to cancel an event due to unforeseen circumstances, a full refund will be given, but we will not be liable for any other expenses, so please buy appropriate travel tickets and/or insurance.

Once you've booked...
Once you have booked, you should receive a confirmation email almost immediately. We’ll send you a ticket and invoice (though you don’t need to bring either of those, as we’ll have your name on file) and a few suggestions of what you might like to bring. Nearer the time, we’ll send you a research paper that you might like to look at before the workshop.
If you do not receive a confirmation email after booking, please contact us at email@example.com - it may be that you have accidentally mistyped your email address. It's also worth checking your spam/junk folder.
