Gatherings: Artist Discussion | Joy Labinjo and Ashley Holmes
Artist Discussion: Thursday 15th of March 6 - 8 pm
23.02.18 - 24.03.18
Ashley Holmes will be discussing 'Gatherings' the current new body of work on show at GOLDTAPPED with artist Joy Labinjo. The artist discussion will ask questions on Labinjo's though process behind Gatherings, her painting practice including this new body of work and the Woon fellowship.
Through drawing and painting Joy Labinjo has begun working through ideas for a new body of work. Labinjo’s works draw on her British-Nigerian heritage and examine the complex relationship between identity, race and culture. In Gatherings Labinjo invites the viewer to step into preliminary drawings saturated with colours, patterns and people, reconfigured from her family photograph albums. The drawings s are used as an immediate way to visualise concepts.
In doing this, Labinjo simultaneously connects with personal histories and uproots them, freeing and displacing individuals from a collective narrative, to create a new space of multiple histories and representations.
Ashley Holmes is a Sheffield based artist interested in the complexities and nuances that surround postcolonial theory and its impact on contemporary attitudes to political, economic and social systems. His work moves between real and fictional narratives that draw upon culturally produced relics of the past, present and future.
Holmes’ works individually and collaboratively across video, performance, sculpture and music, combining an interest in technical processes of moving image and sound; and a critical understanding of the dynamic emotional conditions that can be considered within the context of the term ‘raciology’ - a discourse that assumes certain stereotypes, prejudices, images and identities.
Current ongoing projects include Tough Matter - a collaborative project co-founded with artist Vicky Hayward. Tough Matter is a platform that facilitates experimentation, collective activity and conversations around music and visual arts. Material produced as part of the project includes a series of artist commissions, interviews, live shows and radio broadcasts.
Joy Labinjo (b.1994) studied BA Fine Art at Newcastle University graduating in 2017. She was awarded the Woon Foundation Art Prize in 2017. Recent exhibitions include ‘Ladies who Lunch’, Holy Biscuit, February 2017 Newcastle. ‘Where do we go from here?’ , XL Gallery, October 2017 Newcastle. Belonging, Morley Gallery, January 2018 London.
