In an ideal world, gay men would be able to be who they want to be, comfortable in their own skin, free from the criticism and loathing of their peers and not typecast into socially acceptable personas. Yet, today’s reality is that many gay men feel the need to be gym fit, socially extroverted, fabulous and fashion forward.
Between this image of the ideal and the reality, there’s a darkness and terrible shame hiding within the walls of this outwardly contented community, with many of its inhabitants struggling with depression and mental health issues, social dysfunction, dissatisfaction, destructive behaviours and relationships, and wide scale addiction to alcohol, drugs and sex …
Now, professional coaches and founders of The Quest - Ade Adeniji and Darren Brady, in collaboration with leading performance theatre director Paul Woodward are providing a ‘fly on the wall’ perspective of life as a gay man in today’s world, and creating a platform where issues can be addressed through performance and public debate with professionals from a variety of backgrounds.
The weekend will highlight the gulf between the public and gay world’s perception of a liberated and happy community and address some of the tough emotional realities gay men face in modern times.
