Event description
The cycling paradox - how can cycling be encouraged as a healthy, sustainable, and safe mode of transport?

About this event

This seminar will explore the benefits of cycling alongside the issue of safety.

Oxford prides itself on being one of the UK’s “cycling cities”, but this mode of transport has also caused injuries and a great tragedy for many. As there's a move back to onsite working, we consider how the number of journeys made by bike can be increased and the cycling infrastructure improved.

At the Global Centre on Healthcare and Urbanisation (GCHU), we have investigated preventable deaths involving cyclists across England. At this seminar, we will present the findings from this report alongside four leading voices in the field to share their knowledge, research, and pitch their views on the subject. The seminar will be followed by a Q & A session.

This event is hosted by the Kellogg College Global Centre on Healthcare and Urbanisation and brings together a mix of students, academics, practitioners and members of the public interested in cities and city-living.

Centred on evidence-based knowledge and an ethos of research-practice-educate, linking current best practices in urban development and emerging areas of research, we aim to provoke discussion and constructive action.

Speakers:

Dr Tim Jones, Reader in Urban Mobility at Oxford Brookes University

Dr Alison Hill, Chair of Cyclox

Steve Unwin, Leader of Wheels for All – Oxford

Professor Carl Heneghan – Co-Director of GCHU

This event is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served from 17:00. The talk will begin at 17:30, followed by a drinks reception at 18:30.

Please note that we will be recording this event and a link to view it will be available on the GCHU website at a later date.
